Deodorant Challenge: British Mother Warns Parents About The Harmful Challenge

Chemical burn

Prescott posted a graphic warning on Facebook after her daughter Ellie participated in the challenge giving herself a chemical burn with deodorant spray. The Deodorant Challenge involves spraying deodorant on someone for as long as possible.

Speaking to Somerset Live, Prescott said:

"She [daughter Ellie] still regularly has to see a practice nurse and go to the [doctor’s] once a week.

The incident happened on Tuesday (April 18), but I did not notice anything until she came home from school on Wednesday as it had blistered up a lot by that stage."

Blisters

Prescott said that the blisters on her 15-year-old daughter’s arm that are so bad she may need a skin graft.

Prescott wrote in the post:

"These are the damaging results of something known as 'The Deodorant Challenge' which is currently doing the rounds in Yate and literally involves spraying deodorant on to someone else for as long as possible"

She added: "It's that simple and results in severe secondary burns. The pictures below are that of my Year 10 daughter's arm THREE WEEKS ON which may still as yet require a skin graft."

Garnered online attention

Her post has been shared more than 4,000 times since it was uploaded on May 4. Prescott told the British outlet," Her daughter had no idea of the consequences and hadn't even heard of The Deodorant Challenge before that point."

Dermatologist Dr. Doris said:

"This is a very scary trend, because basically these kids are committing chemical burns. The force of the aerosol itself and the temperature change on the skin can potentially cause second- and third-degree burns."

'It’s just horrendous and needs stopping.'

Prescott told Somerset Live, "Even if we can prevent just one more child from going through this, it will be worth it."

"This challenge really needs to be made as public as possible. It’s just horrendous and needs stopping," Ellie’s mother declared.
