The way your nails look says a lot about you. Plain nails may tell us that you are a busy person. Flashy nails may indicate that you are a bit high maintenance. Funky nail designs tell people that you are a lot of fun and full of personality. Summertime is a great time to let your personality shine through nail art. If you cannot afford to get your nails done by a professional, here are some great nail art ideas that you can easily do on your own.
One thing you need to do before doing nail art, if you are inexperienced, is relax. You can always fix your mistakes with a swipe of acetone. For this design, choose a pink polish to paint your nails first. Then use a lighter green to paint the tips using a sideways motion to get a straight line. You can use toothpicks to make the darker green stripes and the white stripes by dipping them into the polish and dragging them across your nail. Do the same with black polish to make your watermelon seeds. Then, top the whole thing off with a glossy top coat. I personally recommend using Seche Vite as it dries very fast.
Stripes are pretty easy. You can either free-hand them or use striping tape. You want to start out with a white base coat. Then, have fun choosing your other colors. Make sure they are bright colors that you would associate with summertime. If you are using striping tape, apply it evenly on your nails leaving some hanging off of the free edge of your nail and paint right over them with the color that you chose. You want to immediately lift the tape off with a pair of tweezers so the paint does not have time to dry. Then, of course, top it off with a top coat.
If you are confident in your painting skills, you can go into more detail with your nails like you see here. Put down your base color for each nail. Then, you can paint your designs over the top. Instead of using nail polish, you can use acrylic paint to make your designs. The great thing about using acrylic paint is that you can just use water to wipe off your design if you mess it up. When you are done, top it off with a good clear top coat.
Fruity Polka Dots
If you want fruit but do not trust yourself to freehand them, you can pick up some fimo sticks and slice off some fruit pieces to stick on your nail instead. For this specific design, you want to paint your base coat. Then, using a toothpick or a dotting tool, make your polka dots. Using a clear polish, paint the bottom half of each nail, individually not all at once, in order to stick your fimo slices on the ends. You can seal this all with a top coat just be sure to paint around the edges of your fimo slices, not over them or your nails will look bubbly.
Ice Cream Nails
This is a design that anyone can paint if you have a steady hand. Paint on your base colors but leave your accent nail white. You can use a scotch tape to tape a section of your nails in the shape of a long triangle. Fill it in with a light brown polish and remove the tape immediately. After your cone dries, you can use a large dotting tool or the round top of a sewing pin to make your ice cream scoops...super simple.
If you have no faith in yourself when it comes to doing nail art, you can always go simple. Choose a couple of bright colors that compliment each other and use a glitter polish for your accent nail. If you really want your nails to shine, I suggest using Fairy Dust by China Glaze over your plain colored nails to add a scattered holographic shine to your nails before adding your top coat.
There are several ways to create the polka dot look on your nails. You can use nail polish or acrylic paint and a dotting tool and make your own dots that way, or you can buy some round glitter and apply that to your nail instead. If you are going to go the glitter route, you want to paint your base colors first and allow them to dry. Then, going one nail at a time, paint on some clear polish and apply your glitter pieces using a dampened toothpick to pick them up and apply. After all of your nails are done, seal in your design with a nice, thick top coat.
Here is a great nail design for those of you who love boating or just being out on the water. You can use striping tape for your striped nail doing the white as a base coat and painting the stripes in blue. Grab a good gold glitter polish and a toothpick to easily recreate the starfish design.
Dots and Bows
If you paid attention to the rest of the nail art we showed you this far, you can probably guess that you can pull off this design by using some of those techniques. So, we will just talk about the bows. Bows are pretty easy to freehand, but you can also cheat by picking up bow decals that lay flat on your nails or resin bows if you prefer to have them protruding from your nails instead. If you decide to apply resin bows, we suggest just doing one accent nail.
Ombre nails are gorgeous, but to a novice, they can also be very intimidating. They are easier than you think. The clean up is the difficult part, so you want to start off by applying liquid latex as a barrier all around the skin surrounding your fingernail and let it dry. Then, you want to paint your nails with a white base color and allow that to fully dry. Using a triangle shaped makeup sponge, paint the rectangular end with your colors starting with your darkest and working down to your lightest color. For this mani, you want to use a neon blue, neon green, and neon yellow. Positioning the sponge at the top of your cuticle press the sponge down on your nail and dab. Be sure to go slightly side to side so that you can cover your entire nail. Once your sponge starts to feel sticky, stop. You can repeat this step until you have achieved your desired color. Once you have finished, peel off your latex and seal in your nails with a clear top coat.
