Here are a number of surprising habits that cause hair loss.

Hot tools

Using a blow dryer, flat iron, curling iron or other hot tools creates air bubbles within the hair shaft which lead to breakage and hair thinning.

Tight Hair Styles

Tight hairstyles like ponytails, buns, braids or any other style can lead to hair loss. According to Dermatologist Dr. William Kwan: "Wearing braids or extensions that are too tight for a long period of time can lead to permanent hair loss, This is called traction alopecia." To avoid hair loss keep braid or ponytails loose.

Wearing Your Hair Out

When you wear your hair out your hair will be at risk of developing breakage and splits ends. When the protein bonds in our hair are damaged our hair will basically create split ends and get weak.

Eating Habits

"Hair is mostly made up of protein, and as such, your body requires enough of it in order to make it," Dr. Shereene Idriss of Union Square Laser Dermatology. Nutrition deficiencies including protein, press, vitamin B, zinc, and selenium cause balding.

Hot Shower

Hot shower removes natural oil from scalp leaving your scalp dry and damages your hair.

Stress

Dermatologist Shari Hicks-Graham, MD, FAAD, said: "Our body is very protective of our most important functions for sustaining life, If it realizes that we need more energy (blood flow) to go to our heart, lungs, or brain as a result of stress of any kind, our body won't send as much nutrition through blood flow to the scalp. As a result, our hair growth may slow down, or we may experience a large amount of hair loss as a result."

Medications

Some medicine like hormonal birth control, blood pressure medications, isotretinoin for acne, cholesterol-lowering drugs can also cause hair loss. When you stop taking the medicine your hair will be back to normal.

Scratching

Scratching the scalp is unhealthy for your hair. Scratching can harm the hair follicles which will cause your hair to break and fall out.

Over Washing

Washing our hair is a good habit, however, "overwashing" can be a tremendous issue that causes hair loss. Over-washing can flush natural oil from your hairs which can cause dirty scalp, hair follicles, itching or lice.

Hair Coloring

Hair coloring uses harsh chemicals which can lead to breakage and weak hairs. Coloring your hair also causes itchy scalp, redness, and swelling of the scalp, mild dandruff.
